Dr. Altdorff is a hydrogeophysicist (PhD, University of Basel, Switzerland) who investigates soil moisture at different scales using near-surface geophysical methods (EMI, GPR), measures and simulates hydrological processes under different climate and land-use conditions, and works on noninvasive investigation of peatland properties.

From 2015 to 2020 he held a postdoctoral position with the Boreal Ecosystem Research Initiative at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, supervised by Prof. Adrian Unc and Prof. Lakshman Galagedara, contributing the EMI surveys used in the BioSoil North research. He is currently a senior scientist at the UFZ Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany, and at the University of Potsdam, working on large-scale soil-moisture mapping using Cosmic-Ray Neutron Sensing.
