Akintayo Afolabi is a PhD student at the University of Waterloo's School of Environment, Resources, and Sustainability, in the Soil Ecosystem Dynamics Lab under Prof. Maren Oelbermann. His research analyzes greenhouse-gas fluxes from agricultural soils. He holds BEng and MSc degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, where he served as a Lecturer, and brings an engineering background to socioecological issues such as climate change in agricultural systems.

He is investigating the effects of converting boreal forests to crop production and incorporating organic soil amendments on soil greenhouse-gas fluxes, modeling long-term climate-change scenarios. Based in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, he conducts fieldwork on sites recently converted from boreal forest.
