Richard Tingskou is originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he studied microbiology at the University of Manitoba. He completed work terms with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Saskatchewan (biological weed control) and in St. John's, NL (buckwheat and wireworm, mycorrhizal associations in blueberry), then transferred to Memorial University and earned a BSc in Cell and Molecular Biology.

In 2016 he was hired by the Government of Newfoundland as a Research Scientist, conducting on-farm trials, plot research, and demonstration projects, and completed an MSc in Boreal Ecosystems and Agriculture Science at Grenfell Campus under Dr. Adrian Unc, exploring the use of aquaculture organic waste as a nutrient source in a recently converted boreal Podzol. He is a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.) and Certified Crop Advisor (CCA), and as of 2023 coordinates the Resilient Agriculture Landscape Program for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
